The word pareo is a Tahitian word originally meant to refer to wrap-around skirts; they were the earliest, most versatile forms of clothing. Today, the term pareo applies to all kinds of cover-ups, not just wrap-around skirts.
When you go shopping for pareos, think beyond the swimsuit department. I recently spent a day assisting in the accessories department at the high-end department store where I work and discovered some of the very best pareos available there. I was smitten with a number of long pareos by Steve Madden, all priced in the $40 range. I sold the Madden pareos to women of all ages and sizes!!
