Bag Ladies

We were so smitten with Foley & Corinna's oversized crocodile embossed leather "Georgina" clutch that we both had to own it.

The bag features a flap front closure and cotton twill lining with interior zipper pocket. It measures 9" high x 17" long  x 2" deep and includes a chain shoulder strap.  The white leather bag is the perfect warm weather staple and the metallic foil overlay "linen" in bronze is so much more stunning than can be gleaned from the photos.  The bag retails on the Foley & Corinna site for $325 but a number of online sites have the bag on sale for a substantial discount. (We snapped up ours for a fraction of that price.)

For day or evening, this bag is a find for those of us who simply can't bear to pare down on the personal items we can't leave home without.  Typical clutches require one to edit through their purse contents and take only the utter essentials, whereas this bag is as roomy as a small tote, which means you can lug more stuff. The company makes other oversized clutches but the Georgina won hands down for its construction.

Susan Says: Shoe Smart

In case you did not catch a recent segment of The Dr. Oz Show, I want to share with you what a podiatrist and stylist found when they went on a hunt  to find the five top shoes for both looking stylish and feeling great.  Fit, form, function and fashion were the key elements. Dr. Hillary Brenner, a renowned podiatrist, and Robert Gurney, a top celebrity stylist, provided their recommendations for flats, boots, heels, flip flops and wedges:

Flats:  Aerosoles "Bec 2 Differ" flats, retailing around $49.95. These shoes were touted for their good arch support.

Boots:  Kenneth Cole Reaction "Look Over Here" retailing for $54.95.  With a wide heel and rubber sole, these boots are made of soft suede and have great support around the ankle. Because the shoe is rigid around the ankle, it will provide more stability.  A great boot for straight leg or trousers, it is a short, fashionable, comfortable "bootie."

Heels:  The Kelly & Katie "Chandra" shoe which retails for $44.95; it's a silhouette made popular by Michelle Obama and it provides extra padding in the toe.  Dr. Brenner advises a maximum heel height of no more two inches; wearing higher heels can lead to knee and back pain.

Flip flops: B.O.C. "Adie" flip flops retail for $49.95. They are made of soft leather.  The leather thong strap is great on the toes. Wear them with your bright clothes for summer.  How to know if you are wearing supportive flip flops? Simple: if you can bend your flip flops in half, you should throw them away.
Wedges:  The Tahari "Alyssa" shoe retails at $79.95  These fashion-forward wedges fit right in with the ethnic and woven trend. They are not much higher than two inches. Wedges should not be much lower in the front than in the back because that leads to increased pressure on the ball of the foot.

Step out this spring in sensible style!

Susan Says: Springtime Fresh

Spring cleaning also means freshening up clothes that may have been stashed away in storage all winter. Clothing that had been relegated to storage may require some restoration to pristine condition for spring. Here is a trouble-shooting guide:
  • Underarm Stains: According to Steve Boorstein, founder of ClothingDoctor.com, as told to First for Women Magazine, "Even if you washed your tops before packing them away, traces of sweat and deodorant can remain." The result:  yellowed armpits.  During storage, the acids in sweat react with the aluminum compounds in most deodorants, slowly causing the fabric to yellow.  The remedy:  Dampen the area, then sprinkle on unseasoned meat tenderizer (containing papain or bromelain) or a powedered detergent and work into a paste.  Let sit for one hour and rinse with cool water.  According to Boorstein, "The enzymes in meat tenderizer eat away at the perspiration, lifting the stain."
  • Off Odor:  Any smell, whether from mothballs to cedar blocks, tends to intensify in storage, particularly if the source of the odor is oily in nature (mothballs), since oil-based chemicals are poorly soluble in water and won't rinse out in the wash.  The remedy, according to Boorstein, is to toss five pieces of activated charcoal into a paper bag and tape shut.  Place this cachet and the clothing in a plastic bin (to avoid staining; do not let the bag touch the clothes) then cover the container and leave overnight.  By morning, the clothing should be free of odor.
  • Faded Colors:  If your clothing appears to be duller, it may be due to exposure to light.  Even light from a fluorescent light bulb can cause a break down in color pigments. Such things as leftover chemicals (body oil or chlorine from your water) can also degrade the garment's dye. The remedy:  Wash the garment in a like-color load.  According to Boorstein, "If you launder a faded black shirt with a black towel or jeans that you know bleed in the wash, some of the color may transfer onto the dull garment."  If that fails,  Boorstein advises buying Rit fabric dye.
  • Insect Holes:  Linda Cobb, author of "Talking Dirty Laundry with the Queen of Clean," addresses the problem of bugs such as moths and silverfish attacking high-end fabrics such as cashmere.  To mend the damage:  Turn the garment inside out and gently stretch the hole over a tennis ball. Using matching thread, weave a circle around the perimeter of the hole to reinforce gnawed on edges.  Then make vertical stitches to sew the top to the bottom, picking up the open loops from the stitch of the fabric.  Tie off the thread and gently press with a steam iron. To avoid the problem after my own cashmere sweater was lost to moths, I used a sachet purchased at Bed Bath and Beyond in my closet - it kept the moths at bay.
  • Stretched Out Cuffs:  If your sweater cuffs had lost their shape before you packed them away, the problem only intensifies in storage.  Remedy:  According to Cobb, dip cuffs int very hot water for about five seconds, then use a hair dryer on a hot setting and blow dry.  The combination of hot water and air will shrink cotton or cashmere fibers so the cuffs return to their original shape.
  • Wrinkled Clothing: Here's how to get rid of set in wrinkles in half the time:  Place a large sheet of aluminum foil under your ironing board cover; lightly spritz garment with water and press. The conductive foil will retain heat and warm up the backs of the garments while you press the fronts.  Result: Neatly pressed garment in 1/2 the time!
  • Creased Clothing: Here's how to eliminate creases in folded sweaters or tee shirts: Tumble dry with a slightly damp heavy towel for three minutes on delicate setting.  Remove while warm. To keep garments crease-free while in your closet, ideally, hanging garments should not touch one another.  Since that's pretty impossible for most people to achieve, keep a garment steamer handy.   Use the steamer to erase creases in lighter fabrics (silk and viscose).  The moisture fluffs fabrics which helps the material retain its drape.   For best results, let your steamer get really hot (101 degrees) and then point the nozzle six inches away from a garment on its hanger and slowly work your way down.  For linen and cotton garments, however, it is best to use an iron as the material requires the pressure of the iron.

Star Style: Diane Keaton

She started a fashion trend in the 1970's in the movie "Annie Hall."  Now at 66 Diane Keaton remains a highly acclaimed actress (she won an Oscar for Best Actress in "Annie Hall" and was subsequently nominated for a Best Actress Oscar every year for four consecutive decades), an eccentric dresser and the poster child for being sexy in your sixties.
Keaton was recently interviewed by AARP, The Magazine, and demonstrated her eclectic style, arriving at the interview wearing a pouffy miniskirt over leopard-print leggings and black patent pumps and sporting nails covered in plaid appliques rather than polish. She also often wears gloves, since she claims that at her age it is best to "hide anything I can."

While she may want to cover up her hands, Keaton is not adverse to revealing herself in the interview. She talks about her struggles with bulimia, which left her with 26 cavities, as well as a deep emotional hole and her romances with such luminaries as Woody Allen, Warren Beatty and Al Pacino.   When the romances faded, Keaton took the plunge into parenthood at the age of 50, adopting an infant girl and then an infant boy.
"I never understood the idea that you're supposed to mellow as you get older," Keaton told AARP. "Slowing down isn't something I relate to at all.  The goal is to continue in good and bad, all of it.  To continue to express myself, particularly. To feel the world.  To explore.  To be with people.  To take things far.  To risk.  To love.  I just want to know more and see more." Such inspiring words for people of any age!
Keaton says that she has never had plastic surgery.  "My thinking about plastic surgery is this.  I haven't had it, but never say never.  I've done all kinds of things I said  wouldn't do."
Diane Keaton is an inspiration to all ageless beauties as the face for a line of clothing by Chico's and the spokesperson for L'Oreal Paris.  Look for her in upcoming movies "The Wedding," co-starring Robert DeNiro, and "Darling Companion," co-starring Kevin Kline.

"The World's Oldest Supermodel"

Daphne Selfe
People Magazine did a recent feature story on "the world's oldest supermodel," Daphne Selfe, who is still walking the fashion runways at the age of 83. Selfe began her modeling career in the 1950s in the U.K. after winning a local newspaper's modeling competition.
Selfe says that she has never had any cosmetic surgery or Botox and credits her youthful appearance to good genes, creams from the Boots line (the British brand can be purchased at Target or other retail stores or online), and an optimistic, cheerful spirit.

About the aging process, Selfe says, “It’s going to happen, so why worry?” She continues, “I try to remain cheerful, not grumpy.” For example, “I’ve developed glaucoma, but the drops I have to put in my eyes have made my lashes grow! So there is always a plus side.”  (Actually the number-one product for lash enhancement was formulated through glaucoma research and utilizes similar ingredients!)

Selfe is a great example of seeing the upside to aging and embracing the moment and who we are.

Star Style: Carrie and Carole Underwood

Carrie and Carole Underwood

Country music superstar Carrie Underwood and her mother, Carole, seem to have a wonderful close relationship; Carrie even cast Carole to star in her music video for her song entitled, "Mama's Song."

Now Underwood has teamed up with Olay to launch a new initiative called “Beauty by Example," which invites people to visit Olay’s Facebook page and sign a declaration acknowledging their mothers for being beautiful, both inside and out. For everyone who participates, Olay,  the skincare company renowned for its long tradition of cutting-edge, "these-really-work" products, will donate one ounce of product (up to one million ounces) to Look Good...Feel Better, a national organization that boosts the self-esteem of women undergoing treatment for cancer.

Underwood says that she wishes she would have heeded more of her mother's beauty advice. “If I could go back and talk to my 15-year-old self I’d be like, ‘Seriously, listen to your mom,’” Underwood told People magazine.“Drink more water, put more sunscreen on, moisturize. There are a lot of people like me who wish they did more.”

“My mom is a great example to me and my sisters, she’s just the best,” she says. “If I ever had one of those days when it’s like, ‘I don’t feel so great about myself,’ she’d always tell me, ‘You’re beautiful, you’re funny, you sing well.’ She was always a positive person in my life, which is important,” she adds. “People need more positive influences.”

Underwood isn't the only celebrity to credit both her mother and Olay with helping her achieve great skin. Actress Leven Rambin, 21, who appears in the hit movie, The Hunger Games, told People that her mother started her on Olay moisturizer at age 10. "She'd say, 'If I'd used that when I was young, I'd look 10 years younger,'" says Rambin.

Susan Says: Off to The Beach and Beyond!

Swimsuit season is upon us and it's time to prepare!

Coverups: There are some wonderful swimsuit cover-ups in stores and online.

The word pareo is a Tahitian word originally meant to refer to wrap-around skirts; they were the earliest, most versatile forms of clothing.    Today, the term pareo applies to all kinds of cover-ups, not just wrap-around skirts.

When you go shopping for pareos, think beyond the swimsuit department. I recently spent a day assisting in the accessories department at the high-end department store where I work and discovered some of the very best pareos available there.  I was smitten with a number of long pareos by Steve Madden, all priced in the $40 range.  I sold the Madden pareos to women of all ages and sizes!!

Steve Madden Border Print Cover Up $42 @ Nordstrom

Lands' End is offering 30% off one item plus free shipping for orders of $50 or more and they have some wonderful short and long pareos.  I especially liked long chiffon florals and a short "shibori" pareo featured on their site, priced between $35-$40.

Also visit Overstock.com for some beautiful designs, including batik prints. Batik, a centuries-old design method, is an extremely difficult art to master and children begin learning at an early age in order to master the process; designs can take hours or days to create. Each batik sarong on Overstock.com is an individual work of art.
Overstock.com is proud to donate all profits from Worldstock Fair Trade purchases to charity  Shipping is only $2.95.

Prep for swimsuit shopping:  I was duly impressed with the Panasonic ES246AC Bikini Shaper and Trimmer, retailing for $35; is available on line at Amazon.com for $19.98.

Panasonic Bikini Shaper and Trimmer $17.99 @ Amazon
It operates on two AA batteries. It is constructed with hypoallergenic surgical stainless steel blades which are safe and extremely durable.  The five position guide allows for perfect shaping and grooming, eliminating razor bumps and will finally free you of bikini waxing time, pain and payment!

Susan Says: Shop Your Closet

Before indulging in yet another shopping excursion, think, "recession-izing" and consider shopping your own closet.

Stylist Tim Gunn, a member of the team on the ABC television show The Revolution, recently discussed how we can shop our own closets. A simple pencil skirt and a white blouse are basic staples in one's wardrobe but mixing it up with a shoe in a contrasting color can refresh the look and renew your spirit.  It is not about making things match, as much as it is making it work, according to Gunn.  Another good tip is not to wait another season to alter anything you love; it can be much less expensive to make the necessary alternations than to replace it with a similar garment.

When shopping your own closet, you can give a new look to an old jacket by rolling back the cuffs (sometimes a contrasting color of the lining of the jacket will give a great new look) and then rolling your blouse sleeve on top of the rolled-back jacket cuff for a double-cuffed effect.  If a jacket has gotten too tight, you can still save the garment by replacing the zipper with hook and eye closures or wrap a belt around the jacket (if you are well endowed, keep the belt slim!!)

You can also recession-proof your wardrobe through accessories.  Accessories can be inexpensive and I love to forage through Forever 21 whenever I am at the mall; they have an amazing selection of fashion jewelry at rock-bottom prices.  If you visit Southwest Florida, a store called The Best of Everything has an amazing selection of fashion jewelry and knock-offs of many famous brands, mostly priced below $25.00. (They also have a location in Kennebunkport, ME.)
Another way to "shop your own closet" is to enlist a friend who has a good eye for fashion as your "style buddy."  Have your friend help you sort through your closet and breathe new life into old garments. Make a list of items you need to purchase, i.e., camisoles for your sheer tops, interesting hose to update a dress or skirt, colors of accessories to update an outfit; then, donate the items which haven't been worn in some years and might have been impulse purchases that do not fit either your frame or lifestyle.

Here are some other tips of the day which can preserve precious clothing: To avoid lost buttons, dot clear nail polish on button threads to prevent loosening.  When a garment comes with extra buttons, I immediately label them and place them in my sewing box because button replacement can be difficult and expensive; you might have to replace all the buttons on a garment if you can't duplicate the missing button.

Finally, you can double your closet space by using "Huggable" hangers or similar hangers (check Costco) which will preserve your garments in pristine condition and which, because they are so thin, will also enlarge closet space.

The Anorak is Back!

It's back!  The versatile anorak has returned.  A huge trend in the 80's, it seems that this style of jacket remains popular because it is right for anyone, regardless of size or age. Anoraks are, above all, very figure flattering, with their nipped-in waist and mid-thigh or cropped lengths. Anoraks are comfortable and easy to pair with many different styles of clothing.

Anoraks were seen on the Spring 2012 Fashion Runway from designers such as Rag and Bone, Jason Wu, Michael Kors and others, this time around in vibrant colors and new details. Here, a model walks the runway for Rebecca Taylor Spring 2012 wearing a jacket over a flirty dress:

Isabel Gonzalez, senior editor for InStyle Magazine recently discussed anoraks during a TV interview, mentioning the utilitarian features (i.e., lots of pockets) and the overall slimming effect. A model showed off a Vera Wang nylon anorak which retails for $78 (now sold out on Kohl's web site).  The model wore the anorak with a floral dress and the jacket glided over the silhouette for a very slimming appearance.

The model also wore a cropped sleeve anorak which was a great indoor look; this one is from Forever 21 and retails for $32.80.
Anorak $32.80 @ Forever 21

Cropped anoraks are great for petites. Look for ones in bold colors; Joe Fresh has an amazing anorak which retails for $49. Pair with a neutral or print top and go for lots of color in your accessories!

Dana's Deal of the Day: On the Ropes

Woven Bracelet $19.99 @ Target
I spotted this knotted rope bracelet at my local Target store and quickly snapped it up, since I thought it looked pretty and perfect for summer, with its peachy-golden color that will look great with a tan.  When I investigated online, I saw they also make a cool blue version and a necklace version that looks interesting too.

Rope jewelry is a fun, trendy, retro look for summer. Wear them on their own or pile them on with friendship bracelets, lanyards, and other little bracelets for a casually cool look.

Here are some other styles to consider:

This bracelet is from a line aptly called The Ropes; the bracelets are constructed of marine ropes and hardware and are fashioned by a designer from Maine whose inspiration is the ocean:

This Miansai Rope Bracelet from J. Crew is hand-made using military-grade rope supplied by an American company which produces ropes for the US Coast Guard:

Susan Says: "Hair" Apparent

One of the dilemmas in my early days of highlighting my hair was over highlighting; although I hoped for "streaks," it appeared that my hair had gone completely blond.
Clayton Lee, a lead color educator at Bumble and Bumble, told Lucky Magazine's May issue:  "The purpose of highlights (as opposed to single process color) is to add dimension to your hair; so your face looks younger and brighter.  But too many highlights and everything is one color again. Partial ones are much more flattering."  Clayton Lee also advises, "After coloring, wait 24 to 48 hours before washing to lock in color.  And don't wash your hair every day.  Use hair powder or wash by just using conditioner on the ends to freshen up instead."

A new product by Alterna, whose product line I have found to be of very high quality, is called 1 Night Highlights in Shimmering Blonde. It can be found at Sephora.com and retails for $29.00.
Alterna 1 Night Highlights $29 @ Sephora
The product is a mousse (without bleach or dye) and it stays in until your next hair wash.  The secret ingredients are minerals.  This is also a great solution for covering gray.  The product is contained in a can which has a hair brush built-in on the top.   Just press the button and the product shoots up into a brush for application. Wait until dry and blend with your hair brush and you are set until your next hair wash.  It takes all of five minutes. This product is an amazing way to experiment if you have been considering highlights.

Another amazing new product featured in Lucky magazine are combs by Ricky's NYC which have sunscreen and/or conditioning treatments baked right into the plastic! Ricky Care Sun Super Shaper Comb releases actual sunscreen and also contains olive oil; the Argan Plus Jumbo Detangler Comb releases argon oil for shine; and the Keratin Plus Comb, which smooths frizz, provides shine and helps stop breakage.   Amazingly, each comb continues to release its particular ingredient for one year from the date of first use.
Ricky's Sun Shaper Comb $5.99 @ Ricky's

Argan Comb $7.99 @ Ricky's
KeratinPlus Comb $9.99 @ Ricky's

Holiday Fashions

To celebrate the holidays this weekend, fashion returns to femininity ---- pastels, frills and garden prints.
For a trendy look pair a gorgeous floral jacket and/or skirt with boyish-style boots or high-buckled sandals, depending upon weather conditions.
Sheath dresses in bold prints and a little "shruken" blazer are a great look which can take you from Spring through Fall.

Nordstrom has a great little linen blazer from Gibson for $88; it is available in white, tangerine or wheat and features a coordinating print pattern on the rolled-up sleeve.

As for printed sheath dresses, there are tons of styles at every price point; Milly is one designer who makes amazing print dresses.

Milly Garden Print Louisa Sheath $340 @ Bloomingdale's

For a casual look, mix and match colors such as mint, bright blue, pink or other candy-colored cropped pants with a sweater or top such as the one below by Eileen Fisher. Accessorize with a multi-colored necklace or scarf, all tied up with a cute coordinating shoe or sandal.

DVF Dixy Cropped Pants $178 @ Neiman Marcus

Eileen Fisher V-neck Linen Sweater $105.90 @ Nordstrom
Tory Burch "Poppies" Silk Scarf $195 @ Nordstrom
Happy Holidays!!!

You Are What You Wear

Mark Twain said "The clothes make the man," and new research indicates that clothing impacts not only how other people view us, but how we view ourselves. A new study reported this week in The New York Times  showed that the clothes we wear actually can impact how we think, a process called "clothed cognition," the effects of clothing on cognitive processes.

Researchers at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University presented several groups of undergraduates with a white lab coat. Some students were told it was a doctor's coat and asked to wear it while taking cognitive tests. Other students were told the coat was a painter's coat while taking the cognitive exams, while a third group of students took tests while wearing their street clothes.

The students who wore the white coat believing it to belong to a doctor showed the greatest improvement in their ability to pay attention. As the Times explains it: "If you wear a white coat that you believe belongs to a doctor, your ability to pay attention increases sharply. But if you wear the same white coat believing it belongs to a painter, you will show no such improvement."  The researchers concluded that clothes put the wearer in different psychological states.

It's amazing to think that clothes- and what you believe about those clothes-  can actually make you perform better on an exam. Definitely a good reason to feel good about what we wear every day!

Stop Premature Aging Now!

Dr. Oz did it again! He did a great show the other day which provided another valuable roundup of ways to slow down the aging process before it escalates. Here is a recap of the the advice provided on the show by top dermatologists:
  • Forehead wrinkles:  According to Dr. Ellen Marmur, if you raise your brows and you see more than three lines on your forehead, it's time for Frownies which are facial patches that adhere to skin at bedtime and "train" skin to relax and stretch! The forehead-wrinkle-fighting Frownies are $19.95 for an 8-16 week supply
  • Premature graying hair:  Unbelievably, excessive exposure to hydrogen peroxide can escalate graying of hair. Genetics and stress also contribute to premature graying. Chlorella, a green algae that is considered to be one of the most powerful superfoods, can help halt the graying process, according to Dr. Howard Brooks. Chlorella will also help you detox and boost your immune system. You can find lots of places to buy chlorella supplements, such as drugstore.com.

  • Saggy jowls:  Roc Multi-Correxion Anti Gravity Lift Night Cream can work wonders at $28.00. Check out the little video about the cream on Amazon.com.

  • Dark Circles Under the Eye - Caused by genetics, allergies or even rough removal of eye makeup, dark circles can be difficult to treat.  Try Eau Thermale Avene Soothing Contour Eye Cream - Use your pinky to apply;  Avoid rubbing eyes. Also if you believe the dark circles are related to allergies, taking antihistamines can help.
  • Sun spots on hands: Dr. Jordana Gilman has a simple solution: apply lemon juice, which acts as a light chemical peel similar to alpha hydroxy.
