Hey, Big Spender!

Vera Wang and some of the other biggest names in fashion are all over 45!

When it comes to style, guess who are the big spenders?

AARP The Magazine's September 2012 issue reports that the big spenders for apparel are women in the 45-plus age range.  In fact, mature women spent $42.8 billion on apparel for the year ending April 2012. That's some serious spending!

George Simonton, a designer and professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, says that these sales are boosting the appeal of older designers.

It's amazing to note that such iconic designers as Ralph Lauren (age 72), Giorgio Armani (age 78) and Oscar de la Renta (age 80) are all over 70 years of age.

Other designers in the 45-plus age range include some of the absolute biggest names in fashion, such as Vera Wang, age 63; Isaac Mizrachi, 50; Diane Von Fursternberg, age 65; Michael Kors, age 53; Christian Louboutin, age 49; Donna Karan, age 63; and Karl Lagerfeld, age 78.

It seems that some of the most coveted designers and some of their most loyal (and deep-pocketed!) customers are over age 45!

Alexander Wang told InStyle Magazine, ""Burgundy is neither a brown nor a red, but it has the best qualities of both."  "Think of it as a new neutral.  Try it in place of beige, navy, gray or black," the designer added.

The color looks good with most complexions and was seen on Natalie Portman at the Screen Actors Guild Awards and on Emma Stone at the Golden Globes.

Proving that burgundy is not just for young starlets, Helen Mirren, age 67, donned a burgundy dress and looked stunning at a movie premiere last year:

The color works well with shades such as ebony and white, sky blue, cobalt blue, forest green, burnt orange, peony and peach.  Try the trend with an investment handbag in burgundy which will go beautifully with either black or brown outfits or go for burgundy shoes to add a pop of color in lieu of black shoes.  For a monochrome look pair with a light blue pashmina.

Try the trend with these possibilities:

New Louis Vuitton Ads: Gold Medal Inspirations

Michael Phelps & Larisa Latynina of Russia, 77, in new LV ads, as seen in Hello! Magazine
The new stars of a Louis Vuitton ad are US Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, who recently broke the record for winning the most all-time medals, and  Larisa Latynina, 77, the Soviet gymnast who previously held that record.

According to the New York Times, "For nearly half a century, no one approached the number of Olympic medals that Latynina won from 1956 to 1964. She was the first superstar in gymnastics..."

The Times explains that Latynina was such a determined athlete that she even competed in the 1958 world championships while four months pregnant with her daughter, Tatyana. Latynina says that she kept her pregnancy secret, telling only her doctor, so that no one would stop her from competing.
She won five gold medals that year, of which Tatyana told the Times,  “I consider them mine. We won them together.”

Latynina is such an inspiration- right down to the fact that, the Times reports, while she was in the stands watching Phelps break her long-held record, "when the moment came, she knew exactly what a great champion should do. She put on her lipstick."

Chain Gang

Pomellato 67 Silver Pendant $395

Retro chain jewelry is making a big fashion comeback this Fall to complement retro style prints by such designers as Miu Miu and Balenciaga. Hefty, bold, interlocking chain necklaces and bracelets, which can be worn on both wrists, project stand-out style.

Pomellato Silver Bracelet $1,670

Vogue Magazine reports in the August issue that Italian fine jewelry house Pomellato is re-issuing a series of iconic pieces from its 45-year-old archive. All of the pieces are hand made in Milan of "industrial-feel silver," which is reminiscent of the look of the 1970's.

Pomellato Creative Director of Sergio Silvestris told Vogue, "Those years (the 70's) were about freedom of expression and the fall of taboos." He adds, "We decided to make the pieces chunkier for a more modern vibe."

The pieces are an investment, but so gorgeous and fashionable, and have already been proven to stand the test of time!

Surreal Style

Dali Ruby Lips $130 @ The Dali Museum
Salvador Dali was part of a revolutionary group of artists and, of all the Surrealist painters, he was the most highly controversial.  Through paintings, sculpture, furniture and jewelry, Dali's extreme and utterly other-worldly dreamlike eccentricity led to his collaborations with such fashion icons as Coco Chanel and Elsa Schiaparelli.

If you are ever in the Tampa Bay Area, take the short drive over to beautiful St. Petersburg, where you will find incredible beaches, great dining and a world-class museum, The Dali Museum, which is the next-best thing to going to Spain, the home of the world's only other Dali museum in the artist's home town, Figueres.

The Dali Museum has an amazing collection of the artist's work enclosed in an architecturally unique building, and the cafe offers some authentic, delicious Spanish cuisine.

And the extensive gift shop features some beautiful jewelry inspired by Dali's own designs, which, in case you can't make it to St. Pete, is also available online here.

"Giving Back is the New Black"

Kate Owens (center) with members of the Kate's Kuts team and Paul DeJoria, CEO of Paul Mitchell (center left)

Kate Owens, stylist and proprietor at Kate's Kuts, her Paul Mitchell Focus salon in Bonita Beach, FL, is a woman with a mission: to help every woman, regardless of income or life adversities, feel beautiful.

Kate believes in the transformational power of beauty. She says, "I have seen women walk in my shop, shoulders slumped, head down.....but walk out anew! Full of life and confidence! It happens every day for women who can afford it, I wanted to make it happen for women who can't."

In order to make women's dreams come true, Kate began asking all her clients if they knew anyone in need and also contacted local organizations such as women's shelters in the area, Dress for Success, and a local mental health facility, The David Lawrence Center.  Kate got some great leads and soon was conducting her first free makeover on a young woman named Brandy who had just received a Habitat for Humanity house in the local area. With less then 24 hours to do the makeover, Kate and her team had Brandy ready for the house dedication, looking beautiful.

The next makeover was on Pat, a single mother of three, who, with no child support, struggles to get by and can't spend her money on hair care, so Kate's team took over.

Says Kate, "The most emotional make over so far was Miss Jamie. Her transformation was something else, and so is her story. She was in an awful car accident that has left her with quite a large scar on the left side of her forehead and a portion of her brow missing. She was married to the love of her life for two months and he was killed accidentally at a gun range."

Kate says Jamie looked "like a rock star" when the makeover was done, and "she was so grateful, appreciative, so happy." Kate even enlisted her good friend, Tara Gower of Inflicting Beauty Tattoo in Flagler Beach, Fl  to donate permanent makeup to correct Jamie's eyebrow so that she no longer has anything to hide.

Kate and her team have two more makeovers booked right now. One is for a women coming out of treatment and the other is for a women whose daughter is severely handicapped. Says Kate, "I am so looking forward to having these women inspire me with their journeys, their stories and their courage."

Kate draws inspiration from three sources: her own story, the stories of her staff, and the corporate culture at Paul Mitchell.

Kate herself has overcome great adversity. "I can tell you right upfront that I am a survivor, a warrior, and a women that would not be where I am without God, my family, and my friends. I have overcome an abusive first marriage, raised a son as a single mom, had a battle with drugs and alcohol, and have made it to the other side, stronger with a renewed faith. I know if I can make it, anyone can," she says.

Among Kate's staff, two women are widowed, one lost her husband at 36 and another was two months pregnant when she lost the child's father in an freak accident. Another staff member was a mom at sixteen to a child with Down's Syndrome. Another employee is a military veteran who served in Afghanistan.

Says Kate, "I have watched these women on a daily basis overcome these obstacles, show up to work wearing smiles and giving all they have to make our salon what it is every day."

Finally, Kate is inspired by the Paul Mitchell culture, as Kate's Kuts is a Paul Mitchell Focus salon.  John Paul Mitchell Systems is a 32-year-old hair-care products line, which, according to the LA Times, is sold in 87 countries and logs nearly $1 billion in annual sales. The company is led by CEO Paul DeJoria, who has an amazing personal rags-to-riches story and who has a 30 year history of giving through Chrysalis, a nonprofit organization that helps the homeless and low-income individuals get back on their feet and become self-sufficient.

When Kate is giving back to others, she feels most rewarded. "How lucky am I?," she says.  "I get the chance to change a life everyday."

For more information about Kate's Kuts and her makeover program, or if you want a great haircut for yourself, or know someone in the SW Florida area in need, contact (239) 947-5283.

Susan Says: Beat the Heat

The dog days of August are upon us and there are some fashionable insider secrets to looking great while keeping cool:

1.  Slip on a "Thermostat" Tank:  The newest cooling tanks are infused with micro-encapsulated "thermocules" which are actually high-tech particles developed by NASA.  These particles absorb and release excess body heat to keep skin cool. The Jockey Staycool Reversible Tank retails at $21; the reversible design allows you to wear the tank as a V-neck or a crew neck.

Jockey Staycool Reversible Tank $21
2.  Stick on Under-Bra Coolers:  These strips cool for six hours and, because they will lie close to the heart, your entire body will reap the cool benefits.  The strips attach to your bra.  My Breast Friend retails at $10 for four pairs at BreastCoolers.com

3.  Deflate a puffy face:  Dehydration causes the lymphatic system to become sluggish, resulting in facial swelling.  The remedy? Pop an ice cube in your mouth and hold it against the roof of your mouth with your tongue for one minute.  Ice triggers these nerves to cause constrictions in the vessels which reduce swelling from the inside out.

4.  Frizzy Hair:  Humidity causes the hair cuticle to open unevenly, causing frizz.  Remedy:  Dampen your hands with cold water and run them over your hair - the cold temperature closes the outer layer of the hair strand, which is comprised of shingle-like scales.  Next apply a pea-sized amount of a gylcerin-based pomade such as Redken Water Wax 03 Shine Defining Pomade, Retails for $18. for 1.7 ounces at Ulta stores.  Apply from ends to roots.

5.  Suncreen over makeup:  We all know that in order to protect the skin we must re-apply sunblock during the course of the day.  But to preserve our makeup, try re-applying sunscreen via an Instant Mineral Powder by Phillip Thomas Roth.  This product comes in a tube and with a twist, the powder falls onto the brush and glides easily over makeup.  The product comes in three formulations, including one for oily skin and retails for about $30 at Sephora.

Peter Thomas Roth Instant Mineral Powder $30 @ Sephora

6.  Sweat stains:  Dust on Gold Bond Extra Strength Medicated Body Powder.  Dermatologist Francesca Fusco told First for Women magazine, "Baby powder is made with coarse cornstarch but medicated powders absorb moisture with talc, which has a finer grain to prevent clumps."  "Plus, unlike cornstarch, talc won't feed yeast or fungus to cause a splotchy infection called 'summer rash."

Gold Bond Body Powder $8.99 @ drugstore.com

7.  Caking foundation:  Stop makeup meltdown!  By switching from cream or liquid formulas (which cake in fine lines when exposed to heat), look for a mineral foundation in powder form.  The lightweight powder helps absorb excess sweat and oil and the crushed minerals bind to skin when it is exposed to body heat.

8.  Dry Lips:  Flaky, parched lips can come out of a fun day at the beach.  Remedy:  Apply sugar (I usually use brown sugar) with a damp fingertip and gently "brush" for 20 seconds.  Wipe lips clean and apply a lip balm. Try Neutrogena MoistureShine Lip Soother Cooling HydraGel.  Retails for $6.99 at drugstore.com.  It contains SPF 20 as well as a mix of cucumber chamomile and glycerin to keep lips soft.

Neutrogena MoistureShine Lip Soother Cooling HydraGel $6.99 @ drugstore.com

9.  Parched hair:  The enemy: salt water, chlorine and humidity.  The remedy: for daily repair, use a few drops of Argan Oil.  Apply through wet or dry hair. Since Argan Oil contains 80 percent fatty acids, it binds frayed ends so hair looks healthier without weighing it down.

Josie Maran Argan Oil $48 @ Sephora
Also, a deep conditioning treatment twice weekly, especially with a mask containing Hawaiian awapuhi ginger extract helps hair cuticle lay flat, locks in moisture and adds luster!  Organix Repairing Awapuhi Ginger Instant Recovery Mask retails for $7.99 for eight ounces at drugstore.com
