Color Blocking 101

Yesterday we reported on the pleated-skirt trend, which is still going strong for spring. Another trend which is here to stay for spring is color blocking, which as been re-emerging on the fashion runways.

Perhaps you are wondering, what is color blocking? Color blocking is creating an outfit by putting blocks of solid colors next to each other. There's no need to go out and purchase color-blocked items of clothing; you can create your color-block style by simply combining pieces already in your wardrobe!
Here, the actress Freida Pinto models a Michael Kors look in this image from InStyle, which has a fabulous gallery of celebrities of all ages- everyone from Julianne Moore to Michelle Obama to a pregnant Jessica Alba- donning color-blocked looks galore.

The main rule when it comes to color blocking is to keep it simple: color-blocking can cut the body shape, so limit yourself to no more than 2-3 colors in your outfit, and limit yourself when it comes to accessories- choose what you want to color block and keep the rest simple.
Color blocking can actually help to accentuate your figure- you can use a darker color to detract from problem areas. If you want to accentuate your waist, for instance, try a block of color around your middle. If you want to de-emphasize a pear shape, keep the darker colors at the bottom of the ensemble and draw attention to the top with a bright bold shade. To create a slimming effect, wear a darker column down the front of the torso, and then wear a colored jacket or cardigan over top to create the color block.

You can play around with various fun color combinations, such as complementing shades of blue (cobalt, navy, deep blue) or complementing shades of pink, purple and fuschia.
Another way to incorporate the trend into your look is to simply select a color-block accessory. We adore this awesome Marc Jacobs bag in fuschia multi:
A lower-priced take on the trend is this SR Squared by Sondra Roberts Colorblock Clutch which comes with detachable strap.
A simple and casual way to color block on the weekend is to simply experiment with one of the vibrant shades of colorful denim now available. Add a contrasting top or accessory and voila! You have a color block outfit! If you still need more selection, there is a huge assortment of colorblock dresses here.
